Mrs. Brown (1997)

Mrs. Brown (also released and advertised under the title Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown.) is a 1997 British drama film starring Gerard Butler (sorry he always comes first in my book) Dame Judi Dench, Billy Connolly, Geoffrey Palmer, Antony Sher. It was written by Jeremy Brock and directed by John Madden.

The film was produced by the BBC and Ecosse films with the intention of being shown on BBC One and on WGBH’s Masterpiece Theater. However, it was acquired by Miramax and released to unexpected success, going on to earn more than $13,000,000.

In this film, Mr. Butler had to run into the ocean nude causing him to develop hypothermia.  He was treated and soon released.

This is a story of Queen Victoria and her relationship with her servant John Brown. Mr. Butler plays the brother (Archie) of Mr. Brown and is a servant to the Queen.

A true-life story of two strong willed people who find exhilaration in testing each other, said Roger Ebert.

Rugged Scotsman John Brown (Billy Connolly, Gulliver’s Travels) is a lowly servant who looks after the Queen’s Horses. Yet circumstances bring them together, resulting in a passionate friendship that scandalized the nation. Mr. Brown was a true friend to Queen Victoria and he never wavered in his dedication in the service to the Queen.  Although they butted heads, they both respected each other and Mr. Brown would put his life on the line to protect the Queen. His loyalty did not go unrewarded she revered him and her companion.

Mr. Brown never let idle gossip come between them and he would always do what was best for the Queen. There was a rumor that Mr. Brown and Queen Victoria had married. But it was never proven; thus the name of this film “Her Majesty Mrs. Brown”.

One night Mr. Brown went looking for the Queen, it was raining and he contracted an illness and was forced to his bed. When the Queen heard of his illness she summoned the Doctors and sat by his bed and cared for him.

Gerard Butler gave a commanding performance in Mrs. Brown and is sure to leave you Breathless. The countryside is just beautiful and it makes you believe that you are really there.

Not only is this a wonderful film that’s a must see, but you will surely want to add it your collection. As any of Mr. Butlers movies. I believe this is one of Mr. Butler’s first films that he was featured in. So if you want to start a collection of his films, why not start with this one?

FYI Gerard Butler News: While filming this movie Mr. Butler was having a picnic with his mother and family, Mr. Butler heard screams of Help from a young boy (age 14) who had fallen in the TAY RIVER and was drowning. Mr. Butler, (without thought to his own safety) jumped into the river and saved this young man’s life. He was recognized as a hero and received an award for his heroic measures.
