Gerard Butler – A Brief Bio

Tall, dark, and handsome, Gerard Butler’s good looks and even better acting are common knowledge throughout the households of the U.S. Standing at 6 foot 2 inches and just 42 years old, this Scotsman has enjoyed wide acclaim as an actor in films that range from the classical Phantom of the Opera to romantic comedies like The Bounty Hunter. All fame and fortune aside, the outgoing actor may surprise you with how normal some of his habits and life experiences have been.

The youngest of three children, Gerard’s parents divorced when he was just 2 years old. It wasn’t until he was 16 that the young Butler reunited with his father and was able to develop a healthy relationship with him. His father died when Gerard was in his early 20s, but in spite of this personal tragedy he was able to graduate from Glasgow University with a degree in law.

Fortunately for his adoring public, Butler’s law career was short-lived when he was offered a role in the production Coriolanus by actor Steven Berkoff. After his performance, Gerard promptly made a change in careers and made his film debut in Mrs. Brown. His filmography spanning fourteen years now includes a well-rounded total of 40 series, movies, and short films.

Most know Gerard Butler as the hero in films like Beowulf and 300, but it was during the filming of Mrs. Brown that he played his first role as real life hero. As Butler and his mother picnicked near the shores of the River Tay, he heard the cries of a boy who was drowning. Gerard wasted no time in diving into the water and retrieving the child, saving him and earning a Certificate of Bravery later issued by the Humane Society.

While it isn’t entirely correct to say that Gerard Butler is “just like the rest of us,” there are many things about the actor that make him extremely relatable to fans.

  • He prefers his nickname. The actor actually prefers to be called “Gerry” since many Americans struggle to pronounce “Gerard.”
  • He daydreams. Gerard has said, “I love to spend a lot of time on my own. I can seriously go into my own head and let myself travel where I don’t know where I’m going.”
  • He sang in a band. As he trained to become a lawyer, Butler was also moonlighting as lead singer of Speed, a Scottish rock band.
  • He’s sensitive. As he discussed the loneliness of his character, the Phantom, with director Joel Shumacher, Gerard shed tears of empathy for the misunderstood voice teacher.
  • He’s been fired. Butler was fired from a law firm a mere week prior to becoming qualified to practice. This certainly encouraged his switch in careers and to this day fans rejoice.
